Laboartory History
History of the Laboratory of Horticultural Science
In December 1921 (Taisho 10), Ito Hisato was appointed an Associate Professor of the Laboratory of Horticultural Science, and began his laboratory activities in January 1922. From 1923 to 1932 (Showa 7), Tanaka Chozaburo was appointed a Lecturer, and was responsible for the practical aspects of education, research, and management of the Laboratory of Horticultural Science during its early stages. During this period, research on citrus fruits was particularly active, and he achieved many accomplishments, including the discovery of 'Miyagawa Wase', which later supported the development of the domestic citrus industry, and results in the classification of citrus fruits that are still used by researchers around the world today.
Since then, the laboratory has been conducting research on species and varietal differentiation, physiological ecology, genetics and breeding, genetic resource conservation, and cultivation of fruit trees, vegetables, and ornamentals. By conducting a wide range of research, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the diversity of horticultural plants and to elucidate universal phenomena, and to use the results to contribute to society.
The development of the Laboratory of Horticulutral Science to date has been supported by the cooperation of faculty and staff, including professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and technical staff, as well as many graduate and undergraduate students, including international students, research students, and trainees, as well as collaborative researchers both within and outside the university. Our laboratory has produced many graduates, master's degree holders, and doctoral degree holders, who are active in a variety of fields, including at national and private universities and national and public agricultural research institutes.
